The first weekend of September is a special one in Lille, as this city hosts the biggest flea market in the whole of Europe. This market developed from a medieval tradition: in the Middle Ages servants were allowed to sell off their masters unwanted clothes and possessions. Now the people of Lille, and from all over France, come to sell antiques, bric-à-brac, clothing, jewellery, furniture, collectibles, decorative objects and crafts. The market takes over around 100 kilometres of pavement in the centre of Lille every year, and attracts around two million bargain-hunters and browsers. As you wander the stalls, take the opportunity to discover this colourful Flemish-influenced city with its characteristic architecture, sign of a rich trading history. Lille's flea market is one of the most popular events on the French calendar, and includes musical entertainment and countless activities which take place around the market. Enjoy a day at the market hunting for that elusive item, getting some great bargains and of course immersing yourself in local culture: dig into some of the delicious local speciality - moules-frites. The event always creates festive ambiance and this year will be no different: this market is a real must-see event.
